The Columba Project is a Christian based drop-in service in Central Middlesbrough.
The Project was originally set up to assist vulnerable women who were involved with prostitution and/or were addicted to alcohol and illegal drugs. However, shortly after the project was opened it became clear that there was a need for a service for young gentlemen who were homeless and/or have life threatening addictions to illegal drugs. The remit of the project was therefore expanded to meet the needs of socially excluded individuals of both genders, providing a service to the community as a whole.
The drop in is open two nights per week and outreach work is undertaken on an individual basis.
The drop in service provides a safe and warm environment where an individual can come and have a chat, something to eat and in some cases a change of clothes.
The drop in provides a venue for a registered nurse to undertake needle exchange, general health and sexual health services.
The staff at the project have links with a number of organisations and are able to make referrals to drug rehabilitation centres and are able to assist individuals with applying for household, health care and welfare benefits.
We have a very clear objective, which is to provide socially excluded individuals with every opportunity to turn their fortunes around and get their lives back on track.
